The first custom egg we created was Ei:gentum Nr. 326, owned by “bluffingfish”. They are a poker player and wanted an egg made of poker cards.

is there any current design with poker cards now?
wanted to hv one wif poker cards
as i m a poker player
thinking the egg will be combined by many torn corners as the pic above
Now, how do we get a bunch of playing cards into an egg shape? First you gotta start with the cards themselves. So I searched around my apartment and found my old poker-set. Perfect.
I took out some cards and started photographing them one by one, front and back.
The next step was to get them into 3D. I mapped them onto individual planes with round corners. And just like that, i had the base for the poker egg.
Challenge number two was to get the cards into egg shape. I chose to do this with hair-particle system. This distributes the cards in random order onto a shape. You have a lot of control over scale, rotation and of course number of cards. The result looked like this.
I still thought something was missing. Some extra “nugget” on top to round it all off. I decided to model some poker-chips for the background.
With the base shape i got to texturing the chip. I thought it would be cool to have custom control over how the chip looked and made a fully procedural, non-destructive shader setup. With this, i could control the color, the size of the white lines and dots, how shiny the chips should be and so much more!
Truly great!
The node-tree for this material looks like this:
Here a quick preview what you can control with this setup:
As a last step, i arranged the chips in the Background and the poker egg was finished.
It was a lot of fun to create and i was really happy with the result. Bluffingfish liked it as well and had no further feedback. A successful first custom egg 🥳.
